Millarville History

Stop for a second.

Look around you.

Smell the clean, fresh air.

Take it all in.

Millarville General Store, has been cradled for more than a century by the gentle foothills and trees, sits quietly and respectfully on Treaty 7 territory where we respect the deep, historical connection to this land by the Blackfoot, Tsuut’ina, Îyârhe Nakoda, and Metis peoples.

100

For over a century, the Millarville General Store has been a cornerstone of the community and a cherished part of Albertan history.

Malcom Millar

Malcolm Millar opened the first trading post in the late 1800’s and bestowed his name upon the small community, he must have felt the same wonder that we feel today.

John Ware

As did John Ware, the respected ex slave as he rode his horse down what is now Millarville Road on his way to the trading post to pick up supplies for his ranch west of town.

The early settlers, as they struggled through endless winters and soggy springs, surely would look around themselves and take in the amazing beauty as they took a break from their hard work.

William Pegler

In 1926, when William Pegler started the store on it’s current site, did he take a moment to savior and wonder as well?

Tragedy Struck!

When the store was rebuilt in 1990 after a fire, we all breathed a sigh of relief – the hub of the community for 100 years was back and better than ever.

And now, the tradition continues.

Tim Babey

Tim Babey operates the store and brings the same hospitality and dedication to customer service that the Millarville General Store has brought to the community,

a full 125 years later.

We invite you to visit the store and feel the tradition, look at the indigenous jewellery and local crafts, and stop for a moment and feel the history under your feet and marvel at the natural beauty that surrounds you.

And Breathe.
